New Energy Hub in Turin Connects Research with Industry

A new hub for research, development and technology transfer in the field of the energy transition has opened at Environment Park in Turin, Italy. The centre brings together the iENTRANCE and CoSyET infrastructures and provides around 5,000 m² of laboratories equipped with advanced technologies and scientific instrumentation.

The total investment exceeds €55 million. More than €35 million comes from Italy’s National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR), through funding provided by the Italian Ministry of Universities and Research, while around €20 million has been contributed by private partners.

From research to industrial applications

A key objective of the new hub is to support the transition from scientific research to the development, validation and industrial deployment of new energy technologies.

The two infrastructures have complementary roles. iENTRANCE, coordinated nationally by the Italian National Research Council (CNR), focuses on scientific research and the development of advanced technologies. CoSyET, led by the Italian Institute of Technology (IIT), is oriented towards the validation of technologies at higher technology readiness levels and their transfer to industry and the market.

Together, the infrastructures connect fundamental and applied research with technology development, demonstration and industrial applications.

Hydrogen among the key areas

The hub will work across several areas that are central to the energy transition, including renewable energy, hydrogen, decarbonisation, energy storage, new energy carriers and sustainable raw materials.

Its facilities will support the development and validation of technologies for hydrogen production, storage and use, as well as advanced energy storage and management systems. Activities will also address the integration of electricity and gas networks and technologies for converting CO₂ into fuels and chemical products.

The Turin hub demonstrates how research infrastructure and technology transfer can be brought together to support the progression of technologies from scientific development to validation and industrial application. This process is particularly important for hydrogen technologies, where new solutions need to undergo testing and demonstration before they can move towards large-scale deployment.
