Sofia Science Festival: An Educational Initiative for Young Researchers

On May 10–11, within the framework of the Sofia Science Festival, the Bulgarian Association for Hydrogen, Fuel Cells and Energy Storage, together with the Institute of Electrochemistry and Energy Systems (IEES-BAS), presented a dedicated booth entitled “Hydrogen Adventure.” The initiative was primarily aimed at young audiences, as well as at all visitors interested in the prospects of clean energy.

A key element of the program was the educational character “Hydrogencho,” designed to facilitate the accessible presentation of scientific knowledge. With its assistance, children were introduced to fundamental questions such as:

  • How hydrogen can power vehicles, households, and even stars;
  • How a hydrogen-powered vehicle functions;
  • What potential applications hydrogen may have in transportation—on land, at sea, and even in space.

At the booth, visitors also learned about the H2START project, coordinated by Trakia University in Stara Zagora, in which the Association is a partner. The project aims to establish a Bulgarian center for research and innovation in the field of clean hydrogen technologies. In this way, the initiative not only introduced young audiences to emerging energy solutions but also highlighted the importance of long-term scientific and technological development.

The organizers extend their special gratitude to the following partners:

  • Institute of Electrochemistry and Energy Systems (IEES-BAS), who presented Bulgaria’s first hydrogen vehicle—Hyundai Nexo—along with live demonstrations of hydrogen technologies;
  • See Hydrogen, who provided the Toyota Mirai for demonstration purposes;
  • Trakia University, who supplied model hydrogen cars for interactive educational activities with children;
  • Sofia Science Festival, for the opportunity to present the topic of hydrogen in an accessible and engaging manner to a broad audience.

We are confident that such initiatives will continue to foster the interest of children and young people in science and sustainable technologies, while Hydrogencho will remain a symbol of inspiration and a bridge between education, scientific research, and innovation.
